Training and Development

The Office of the Associate Vice-Chancellor for Multicultural Affairs launched two nationally recognized cross-cultural diversity training tools, during the Spring of 2007. The purpose of these trainings are to build awareness on how cultural differences profoundly impact people in organizations; motivate participants to rethink their behavior and attitudes toward others; allow participants to examine their own biases and focus on how they perceive differences; examine how stereotypes are developed, barriers created, and misunderstandings magnified; and identify diversity issues within our own organization which must be addressed.  In 2008-2009, plans are underway to cultural compentecy and diversity training to medical students, residents and clinical faculty.

Marty Lasker, president of HLC, Inc., an international provider of training and consulting services, explains a cultural simulation activity to Medical Center faculty during a training workshop sponsored by the Division of Multicultural Affairs. The workshop demonstrated the intricacies of cultural competency.
